The goal is ambitious, but it’s not exactly new. In 2013, the World Health Organization set a similar objective, with a handful of countries including Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Namibia, and Botswana already reaching that goal. The United States still lags to reach that goal, with an estimated 40,000 new infections reported every year. Richman says it’s possible to stem the spread of HIV, but the federal government needs to make a much stronger commitment.Richman points to New York City as a model for managing the virus. In New York, people who are infected, are identified and promptly given the drugs for treatment. In some states, especially in the southeast, people with HIV have a more difficult time getting the drugs to help control it.Richman says it will take political will and more money to make the changes in public policy to help stop the spread of HIV. last_img read more

Starting with version 2.9, you can use the app to change the color of compatible smart bulbs. A year ago, the app was mostly used for setting up your Google Home smart speakers. An update in the fall added well-organized smart home controls to the app that mirrored those found on Google’s smart displays. You could see all of your connected gadgets organized by room and control them with a touch. Now those touch controls are getting more robust. You’ve long been able to change the color of your compatible bulbs with a voice command to any device with Google Assistant built in, such as the Google Home Hub smart display. If you didn’t feel like talking, you had to go into the individual Philips Hue or Lifx apps to change the color of your bulbs. The newest version of the Google Home app lets you control them both from one spot.As before, you can also turn your smart lights on or off and change their brightness with the app. You can organize your lights into rooms and control them all at once. The code for the update was spotted on Monday by 9to5Google, who also noted newly added support for the upcoming Lenovo Smart Clock. The Smart Clock will offer a trimmed down version of the Lenovo Smart Display tailored for your nightstand. It’s due out this Spring. The update for the Google Home app hasn’t hit my Android phone yet, but it’s live on my coworker’s iPhone. A Google representative confirmed to CNET over email that the update officially launched Wednesday and should be live for everyone over the course of the day. Trash can redux Reexamining the legacy of the 2013 Apple Mac Pro

The 2013 Apple Mac Pro. Sarah Tew/CNET In London last week to speak at a video games industry conference, I found myself in Harrods, the famously extravagant department store with everything from gourmet food to expensive suits to collectible coffee table books the size of actual coffee tables. (Editor’s note: Apple unveiled a new Mac Pro at WWDC on Monday.)Naturally, I had to check out the technology section, a long series of corridors filled with high-end gear, from £700 David Lynch Edition Bang & Olufsen speakers to a £1,200 Alligator skin iPhone case.Read more: Meet the new Mac ProIn the dedicated Apple nook of the store, I saw an old friend that I had not expected to. Right next to all the relatively new iPad Pros and Apple Watches, I saw a prominently displayed Mac Pro desktop. It looked just as it had in 2013, when that bold design launched, and yes, Harrods was selling it at its full price ($3,000 and up). Long before butterfly keyboards and Touch Bars, the Mac Pro was the Apple design it was popular to hate on. The design was radical for 2013, coming after years of traditional desktop towers. At the time, I found the change bold and forward-looking, but in hindsight, it was too focused on aesthetics and not enough on functionality. With extremely limited upgradability compared to the old tower design, the Mac Pro could not keep up with the growing demands of creative power users in an evolving world of 4K/8K video, HDR photography and VR/AR development. Apple Mac Pro (2013)Get a look at that interior. Sarah Tew/CNET At the time, I said, “Apple’s new Mac Pro is a stunningly fresh take on the desktop computer. But it’s probably not for you.” One reason was that nearly any expansion would have to happen via externally attached Thunderbolt devices, and even in casual use, all those cables quickly added up to a cluttered workspace. From my original review: “Components are built around something Apple calls a unified thermal core. A small lock switch is moved to the unlocked position, and the entire outer sleeve of the system lifts off, exposing the interior… the idea being promulgated here is that your expandability should flow outward, not inward.”But it was that very thermal core that prevented the Mac Pro from keeping up customers’ needs, especially for graphics power. By 2017, the company had essentially thrown up its hands in the matter, giving the same trash can chassis a reasonable spec upgrade, but then shifting the conversation to a completely different future version of the Mac Pro desktop that would trade the now 6-year-old design for something new and modular. Apple Mac Pro (2013)The 2013 Mac Pro next to an even older tower Mac Pro. Sarah Tew/CNET We’ve been waiting ever since, and in the meantime, Apple execs have dropped a handful of hints, most centered on a “not now,” “not yet,” “maybe next year,” message. An upgraded all-in-one desktop, called the iMac Pro, has attempted to fill some of that marketplace hole, but that system has similar expandability limitations and is also based on a very mature iMac design (plus you’re stuck with a computer and display built into a single unit). This week’s WWDC keynote may be where that wait ends. While the Harrods sales staff may not have read into it yet, the Apple rumor mill is all-in on a new the Mac Pro at least making a preliminary appearance at Monday’s keynote. Sensex spurts on Economic Surveys optimistic projection for FY17

first_imgIndian stock markets, which had trimmed the morning session gains during the afternoon trade on Friday, were up almost one percent after the government tabled the Economic Survey 2015-2016, projecting a GDP growth rate for 2016-2017 in the range of 7 to 7.75 percent. The S&P BSE Sensex was trading at 23,203, with a gain of 226 points, or 0.99 percent, at around 1.45 p.m.The biggest Sensex gainer was India’s largest lender State Bank of India, which was trading at Rs 155, up 4.11 percent; state-owned miner Coal India, Larsen & Toubro, NTPC, BHEL and Axis Bank were also trading with a gain of 2 to 3.40 percent. On the NSE, the 50-scrip Nifty was trading with a similar gain of about one percent at 7,040, after slipping below the psychological mark of 7,000 during the afternoon trade. Most of the sectoral indices were up, except for auto. The rupee, which opened lower at 68.73 and plunged to 68.79 to the US dollar, recovered and was trading at about 68.71, though not far away from its all-time low of 68.85 hit in August 2013.”The intra-day range is seen between 68.60-68.85 levels,” IFA Global said in its note on Friday. The yield on the Indian 10-year benchmark 7.72% maturing 2025 had risen to to 8.07% on account of system-wide liquidity shortfall, but eased later after the survey was tabled in Parliament. On Friday, the government’s Economic Survey 2015-2016 forecast the economy to grow between 7 and 7.75 percent in FY2017, almost flat from the advance estimate of 7.6 percent for the current year released last month.last_img read more

Ericsson India files insolvency case against Reliance Communications

first_imgA worker cleans a mobile store of Reliance Communications Ltd, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani, in Kolkata, India, September 10, 2016.Reuters fileEricsson’s Indian subsidiary has filed insolvency petitions against Reliance Communications and two of its companies to recover unpaid dues, the Indian mobile operator said in a stock exchange filing on Wednesday. The Swedish telecoms equipment maker, which signed a seven-year deal in 2014 to operate and manage Reliance Communications’ nationwide network, is seeking a total of $180 million from the three companies, the filing said.Reliance Communications said it planned to challenge the insolvency petitions. The filing said the Ericsson case would go before the National Company Law Tribunal, the designated court for bankruptcy cases in India, on September 26.”Ericsson has done this as a last resort in order to resolve an issue regarding debt that Reliance owes to Ericsson for services provided under a contract. As the legal process is ongoing, we don’t have any further comments at this point,” the Swedish company said. The petitions come as the Indian phone company controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani races against time to seal deals to sell a stake in its tower assets to Canada’s Brookfield and to merge its mobile services business with rival Aircel.Reliance Communications reported its third quarterly loss in a row last month and is trying to find ways to cut its debt after creditors gave it a reprieve on loan repayments until the end of 2017.The Brookfield and Aircel deals are expected to reduce its debt burden by 250 billion rupees. Ambani said at the time of the loan reprieve that he expected to complete the deals by September. The company’s losses are, in part, a result of competition from free voice and cut-price data plans offered by Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom start-up backed by Ambani’s elder brother and India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani.Ericsson is aiming to recover Rs 4.91 billion from Reliance Communications, Rs 5.35 billion from Reliance Infratel and Rs 1.29 billion from Reliance Telecom, the filing said.Reliance Communications shares closed 4 percent lower on Wednesday before the filing was released, after local media reports said Ericsson had filed an insolvency plea.India last year revamped its bankruptcy laws to help cut a record $150 billion in impaired bank loans. The rules allow financial as well as business creditors to trigger bankruptcy proceedings against a company which has defaulted on payments.last_img read more

AFP file photoThe organization that oversees the Nobel Peace Prize says the 1991 prize awarded to Myanmar’s Aung Sang Suu Kyi cannot be revoked, reports UNB quoting AP.The Norwegian Nobel Institute on Friday said that neither the will of prize founder Alfred Nobel nor the Nobel Foundation’s rules provide for the possibility of withdrawing the honor from laureates. An online petition signed by more than 386,000 people on Change.org is calling for Suu Kyi to be stripped of her Peace Prize over the persecution of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority.Suu Kyi received the award in 1991 for “her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights” while standing up against military rulers. She became the country’s de facto leader after Myanmar held its first free election in 2012 and she led her party to a landslide victory.last_img read more
