Using Mechanical Turk For Your Startup

It’s not the first time that there have been reports that the marketplace for micro-tasks has been used to employ folks for spam or fraud, or to prank friends or game The New York Times Most Emailed list. But as ReadWriteWeb’s Marshall Kirkpatrick has often argued, there are some very interesting things you can do with Mechanical Turk. And Lindsey Harper, founder of Swayable, has found that the service has benefited her greatly as she’s developed and tested several components of her web app.Using Mechanical Turk to Validate an IdeaWe noted back in September when Harper had utilized Mechanical Turk in order to help validate her startup idea, using the service to poll 200 people on their reactions to her concept. Then, she had surveyed people to find whether or not they’d use the service, example of how they might use it. In addition to asking for general feedback on the idea, she also captured gender and age demographics, so she could have a better idea of who her market might be.Using Mechanical Turk to Test Your AppSince then, Harper has continued to use Mechanical Turk, particularly for testing new features and product development along the way. She notes that the analytics and feedback that come with MTurk aren’t that useful, so she uses the service in conjunction with SurveyMonkey – the “hits” on Mechanical Turk direct workers to the survey. She’s used MTurk workers to test new features, to find bugs and dead links, asl well as to give feedback on the site’s look and feel. Harper says that the service has provided her with a “mass of people for testing” that she could not have otherwise afforded to hire.Lessons LearnedShe does note that she’s learned several lessons along the way in helping her maintain the quality of the work she’s getting done. She’s restricted the location of MTurk workers to those within the U.S, for example, and she’s adjusted her pricing until she’s found the “sweet spot” – neither the highest nor the lowest. There, she says, she’s found quality workers, although she says she does keep an eye out for people that are simply spamming her responses. As a single-person and non-technical founder, Harper is outsourcing many of the pieces in building her app, of which the work sent to Mechanical Turk is just one component. Harper says she feels as though outsourcing has a bad rap – “Why not hire?” she’s often asked. And certainly the recent news about Mechanical Turk and spam will do little to improve that reputation. But for her part, Harper says she plans to continue using the service for testing new features, even after she launches next year. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…last_img read more

Sohrabuddin case: Offence committed in line of duty, says CBI court

first_img Motivated probeIndicting the investigating agency, Mr. Sharma said: “The negligence of CBI towards material part of investigation clearly indicates that they hurriedly completed the investigation either by using replica of the earlier recorded investigation and have implicated the police persons who had not at all knowledge of any conspiracy; rather they appeared innocent.”“There is no hesitation in recording that during the investigation of these offences, the CBI was doing something other than reaching the truth of the offences.”Judge Sharma also said: “The evidence could not withstand the judicial scrutiny of the Court.” While acquitting 22 of those accused of the killing of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, Kausar Bi and Tulsiram Prajapti, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court earlier this month said: “The alleged offence was committed by the accused persons in discharge of their official duty and under the colour of office; even if it is assumed that the accused persons acted in excess of their official duty, then also they are entitled to claim protection of Section 197 (prosecution of judges and public servants) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).”Entitled to acquittalThe Hindu has a copy of the 358-page judgment which says: “It is clear that the accused who are police officials and who were found doing the act and deed in discharge of their official duty, are entitled for the benefit as contemplated under Section 197 of CrPC.”“It was necessary for the investigation agency to obtain sanction of the competent authority before filing chargesheet. In absence of the sanction, the accused are entitled for acquittal.”In his last judgment, Judge S.J. Sharma said: “The accused, as seen from the material in the chargesheet, were certainly acting in discharge of their official duties. There is reasonable connection between the ‘act’ and discharge of official duty… The accused were doubtlessly a ‘public servant’ when the alleged offence is alleged to have been committed.”The court said, “The entire investigation was targeted to act upon a script to achieve the goal to anyhow implicate political leaders….”last_img read more

Samsung’s next wearable will be a Gear S3, Gear Fit 2 hybrid

first_imgSamsung is now said to shift its focus on wearables from phones for sometime. The South Korean company has reportedly been working on a wearable device for quite some time, which will mainly be like a fitness tracker and not exactly a smartwatch, so this is for sure it’s not going to be the Gear S4. A lot has already revealed by the ‘unknown’ device after its FCC certification. Samsung has now revealed some more details about the upcoming wearable device.Looks like, the company is over enthusiastic about the upcoming device. As per Sammobile, Samsung has started sending out a survey to the members of its SmartLab Plus program. In the survey, the company is basically asking for opinions from the members on some ‘taglines’ that can be used to promote the new product. The survey doc read: “Samsung needs your opinion on some taglines that are being considered for when promoting the below product. By tagline we mean a phrase that becomes identified or associated with a product as a result of promotion or advertisement.”Later in the note, Samsung reveals some details about the device. The company writes, “The new product concept takes the best bits from Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2.” Further explaining about the new product, the company says, “The product is in the form of a smartwatch (rather than an active tracker) and offers maximum comfort with a smaller body and thinner watch straps.” It further highlights that the watch straps will be replaceable which will allow customers to personalize their watch as they see fit. This clearly indicates that the upcoming wearable by Samsung will be much like a fitness tracker, which the company said earlier.advertisementAlso Read: Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ now support Google Daydream VR”The product offers great peace of mind,” says Samsung. Furthermore, the device is said to be water resistant, and hence can “withstand water to the point where it is swim proof, allowing all forms of fitness tracking.” It is also going to offer all-round fitness for everyone starting from beginners to experts. The product will be focused around – activity tracking, weight or calorie management, active sports and coaching.Further, it will also feature a revised user interface for improved widgets which will also include options like – “progress towards your goals.” It will also include smart inactivity option. This feature is already available on the existing Samsung smart watches. The smart inactivity alerts the user when inactivity.  It gives reminders to active while on a flight, or even asks you to take a break while driving and so much more.”Whilst having a wide range of fitness features, the product is designed to be something you wear all day from work to gym,” says Samsung. With this it can be concluded that the upcoming wearable by Samsung – whatever the company may call it will be a fitness tracker cum smart watch. The company is basically trying to blur lines between fitness tracker and smart watch. Hence, it is still unclear if the new product will be added to the Gear S or Gear Fit lineup.last_img read more

ED files supplementary chargesheet against former Haryana CM names immovable assets

first_imgNew Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet against former Haryana chief minister O P Chautala in connection with a money-laundering case on Thursday. The agency mentioned in the chargesheet that immovable assets worth Rs 3.68 crore were attached by it on April 13 in relation to four properties in Delhi, Panchkula and Sirsa. It said the investigation conducted so far under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) had revealed that Chautala laundered the disproportionate assets by depositing illegal cash in the bank accounts of his and his family members. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’The ED said this was done to avoid the back trail of money, merge the illegal cash with genuine income and show it as untainted. This laundered money was further used to purchase new properties or carry out construction on the already acquired properties. The chargesheet was filed before special judge Kamini Lau, who posted the matter for consideration on May 16. Referring to Chautala’s affidavits filed before the 2005 and 2009 Haryana Assembly polls, the agency said he had disclosed his assets to publicly Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&Kproject the tainted properties as untainted. “During the period between May 24, 1993 and May 5, 2006, O P Chautala, while functioning as a public servant (the CM of Haryana), allegedly acquired assets disproportionate to his income to the tune of Rs 6,09,79,026. World Cup Crib Notes Day 5

The United States kicks off its 2014 World Cup campaign on Monday against Ghana, the team that eliminated the Stars and Stripes from the 2010 tournament in the round of 16. That’s the must-watch game in the U.S. But for most of the rest of the world, it’s Germany versus Portugal.See our World Cup interactive for the latest probabilities. — Allison McCannIN DEPTHSo what’s changed for Ghana and the U.S. since they last faced each other on this stage?America’s lineup has been transformed in the four years since 2010’s disappointment. Only four of the U.S. starting 11 from the loss to Ghana — goalkeeper Tim Howard, midfielders Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey, and striker Jozy Altidore — will be in coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s opening lineup Monday. (The most notable absence is Landon Donovan, though central defender Carlos Bocanegra was another useful veteran who saw his role with Team USA phased out in recent years.)Klinsmann made clear his preference for a fresh group during the selection process, and — Donovan’s ouster aside — that’s not a bad thing. New faces since 2010, including Fabian Johnson and Geoff Cameron, have acquitted themselves reasonably well for clubs in Europe, a factor Klinsmann values highly. Graham Zusi, Brad Davis and Matt Besler are playing effectively in MLS. The cupboard isn’t quite as bare as is widely believed, though the U.S. is still far from elite in the talent department. As for Ghana, it’s turned over six of its eleven starting slots from four years ago — although most of its best players from 2010 are back, including jack-of-all-trades Kwadwo Asamoah, midfielders Andre Ayew, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Michael Essien, and striker Asamoah Gyan. The Black Stars have also promoted the talented two-way midfielder Sulley Muntari into a regular starting role since their last World Cup meeting with the United States. (Needless to say, midfield is the strength of Ghana’s roster.)Most members of that group are plying their trade in top European leagues, so Ghana’s high-end talent is probably superior to that of the United States. But Ghana’s edge in talent hasn’t always translated in international play. It ranked just 38th in the pre-World Cup Elo Ratings, while the Americans ranked 13th.When ESPN’s Soccer Power Index (SPI) ranks teams, it attempts to combine these two elements — observed results and underlying talent — into a single rating for a given national team. And the current SPI rankings say the United States and Ghana are in a dead heat. The U.S. ranks 22nd in the world with a 77.53 SPI — meaning the Americans would compile 77.53 percent of the possible points if they played a round robin against every other national team in the world. Ghana ranks 25th, with an SPI of 77.37. That’s the smallest SPI margin between any two teams that will face each other in the group stage of this World Cup.As of Sunday, the sportsbook Bovada has Ghana as a slim favorite over the U.S., 35.8 percent to 34.5 percent (with a 29.7 percent chance of a draw). The FiveThirtyEight match projection system flips those odds around, giving the United States a very slight edge: 37.5 percent to 33 percent. Whatever happens, U.S.-Ghana should be one of the most evenly matched showdowns of the entire World Cup.YesterdayArgentina’s 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Sunday served notice to the casual soccer fan: One individual moment of brilliance can overshadow an average game.In the first 64 minutes of the match, Argentina’s Lionel Messi was the game’s most active participant in the attacking third, but the three chances he created didn’t translate into a single shot on goal. And he had turned the ball over a game-high three times. In the 65th minute, Messi reminded the Maracana how quickly he can change a game. He made a run from the midfield, past Bosnian midfielder Muhamed Besic, and played a quick 1-2 ball to teammate Gonzalo Higuain. Messi’s short-burst quickness created separation from Besic, and he hesitated slightly before the shot, driving another Bosnian player into Besic and out of position.Messi then banked a left-footed shot off the post for the eventual game-winning goal, Argentina’s first shot on goal of the match and only the second goal of Messi’s World Cup career. From his first touch in midfield to the ball crossing the goal line, the entire sequence took just over 9.5 seconds and erased the match’s first 64 minutes from spectators’ memory. That was all it took; the night belonged to Messi, whose production under Alejandro Sabella has been outstanding. Messi has 22 goals in 26 international games since Sabella became Argentina’s manager in September 2011, compared with 17 goals in 61 matches under all other managers. — John Parolin, senior stats analyst, ESPNOFF THE PITCHIf Ghana defeats the United States on Monday, Americans shouldn’t be too quick to feel ill-disposed toward the West African nation. The United States imports two bread-and-butter items from Ghana (though they are neither bread nor butter): oil and chocolate. In 2011, just more than 44 percent of Ghanaian exports to the United States was oil (crude and refined) and roughly 42 percent was chocolate (cocoa beans, chocolate, cocoa powder, cocoa paste and cocoa butter). That’s $374,624,626 in chocolate.Ghana also sent $7,016,768 in fake hair to the U.S. Thanks, Ghana! What does the U.S. send to Ghana? Cars — worth about $303 million in 2011. — Micah CohenFurther ReadingCtrl + ← The World Cup, the World Cup And the World CupHow Soccer Explains the Sports Page read more

Buckeye seniors Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr earn 100th career win

Junior center Amir Williams led the Buckeyes with a career-high 18 points while Craft and Smith Jr. added 16 and 10 respectively.Matta said having Williams produce at a high level regularly has been a plus for the Buckeyes this season.“He was lacking a little energy on the defensive end to start the game and I thought he really elevated after that and guys did a nice job of finding him, getting him the ball … we’ve got to put him in position to be successful and I think we did that where we got him the ball tonight,” Matta said.Sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle provided a spark off the bench, scoring a career-high 17 points and going 5-8 from 3-point land.No Buckeye starter had less than nine points on the night. As a team the Buckeyes shot 69.2 percent from the field and 60.9 percent from beyond the arc. Nine different Buckeyes scored and five were in double figures.Smith Jr. said a big part of the high scoring numbers was the team feeding off each other as the game went on.“I think when guys see other guys make shots it boosts everyone’s confidence,” Smith Jr. said. “It makes everybody think ‘why can’t I be the guy to make the next shot,’ and that stuff catches on fire and guys start swinging the ball and getting wide open shots and coach has been on us to make your open shots.”Next up the Buckeyes are scheduled to take on Maryland (5-2, 0-0) at the Schottenstein Center as part of the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge Wednesday at 7 p.m. Junior center Amir Williams (23) dunks the ball. Nineteen losses. That is the record of senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. as members of the Ohio State men’s basketball team. The seniors clinched their 100th career victory Friday night with a 99-64 win against North Florida (4-4, 0-0).“I don’t know if I’ve ever been prouder, today is their 100th win at Ohio State,” coach Thad Matta said after the game. “They’re the second fastest in college basketball to get there, Kansas got there in 116 and they got there in 119 … it’s amazing and I’ve never been prouder of two guys.”No. 7 OSU (6-0, 0-0) used a balanced scoring attack and a hot shooting night to secure their sixth victory of the season. The Buckeye starting five hit their first 13 shots, with team shooting 19-27 overall in the first half, and scored 19 straight points after falling behind 6-5 to build a comfortable lead.“We just really wanted to come out and make the most of this opportunity. We wanted to find a way to put 40 minutes together, something that we hadn’t really done this year … we just came in and wanted to get out to a fast start,” Craft said. After struggling over his last three games, only managing two made baskets in 20 attempts, junior forward LaQuinton Ross turned things around against North Florida.Ross hit his first four shots of the game and finished the day with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including a career-high four 3-pointers.Craft said that Ross’ improvement was partially because of his effort in the practices leading up to the game.“LaQuinton’s a competitor, he’s the first one to tell himself he hasn’t been playing great and we didn’t have to really get on him. He took that on himself to come out in practice and do whatever he needed to do, just really try to find that role and he did that,” Craft said after the game. “He came into practice and had a couple great ones, and usually when we have guys practice well it carries over really well to the game and we saw that today.”OSU led 48-29 at halftime, and used a 14-2 run at the start of the second half to put the game away for good.North Florida struggled against the Buckeye defense, shooting 20 of 52 for 38.5 percent and turning the ball over 18 times. read more
