Milton Smith88A petty thief was unhappy to hear that he will be spending the next year of his life in prison for stealing a number of items.Milton Smith, 29, of Lot 169 David Street, Kitty appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He pleaded guilty when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to him.It is alleged that between September 22 and 23, 2016, at Young Street, Kingston, he broke and entered El Dorado Trading and stole two trolleys, two travelling bags and one helmet; a total value of $95,000.The prosecution told the court that on the day in question; the Virtual Complainant (VC) secured the articles in the premises and went out.However, upon his return the following day, the articles were missing. CCTV footage showed the defendant removing the articles. The matter was reported to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters, in Eve Leary, and the defendant was arrested. He was told of the offence and admitted to carrying out the act.When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say, he vibrantly said, “I already pleaded guilty.” As such, he was sentenced to prison.
A Berbice woman is now dead after her husband reportedly stabbed her to death at their Bath Squatting Area, West Coast Berbice home.Dead is 44-year-old Geeta (only name given). Guyana Times understands that the woman’s body was discovered by her son about 18:00h on Tuesday evening.This publication was told that the woman’s husband, who is called “Shahrukh Khan” put his son, daughter and son-in-law out of the house last week following an argument.A neighbour told this newspaper that the man was very abusive towards his wife and regularly consumes alcohol. According to the neighbour, on Tuesday the son returned to the house to check on his mother and made the gruesome discovery. Having made the discovery, the son raised an alarm and the Police were called.Guyana Times was told that from the state of the body, the woman may have been killed on Monday. However, the Police were unable to locate the husband, who has since gone into hiding. An investigation has been launched.

After we sent him the winning idea, Silver wrote that there is a “growing consensus that we should reform the draft lottery.” But on this week’s Hot Takedown he said that after team owners voted down a proposal for change last year, the league has decided to “park the issue” for the foreseeable future.Silver argued that the marketplace is providing the biggest pressure on teams like Philadelphia, which he said are realizing that “losing comes at an enormous cost.” Silver sees a “resetting of sorts” with the team. This interview was conducted Friday, Dec. 18.Silver not a fan of Sixers strategyNeil Paine: Are you personally, as the commissioner, OK with the way that the 76ers have run their franchise the past three seasons?Adam Silver: I don’t want to answer that directly. As I said, there’s a marketplace of ideas and approaches that go into managing a franchise.Am I fan of that strategy? Put it this way: No. But does that mean that it’s not acceptable under the league rules? It doesn’t. The Sixers are a mess, and Adam Silver is not happy. The NBA commissioner joined our sports podcast, Hot Takedown, for a conversation about the structure of the draft, the perverse incentives that it creates and how his office can try to “cajole” teams like the Philadelphia 76ers into being more competitive. But he admitted that ultimately, he may not be able to reset the competitive balance of the league by tweaking the draft rules. Truth to rumors that he intervened with Sixers?Chadwick Matlin: Anonymous reports suggested that [you stepped in and pushed for the hiring of Jerry Colangelo] due to owners who wanted the situation in Philadelphia changed. Are those reports correct?Adam Silver: Those reports are not correct. Josh Harris, who’s the principal owner of the 76ers, decided on his own that he needed to change course. He and I had many conversations along the way about the utility of the strategy that he was following. And he came to the conclusion once this season began, and he saw how his team was performing on the floor, that he needed to change his strategy.Other owners were not pressuring him at all. In fact, it’s a weird dynamic in the league that while all the owners would like to see teams well operated, other owners just want to win (laughter). And so nobody was calling me and saying go call the 76ers and tell them how to beat us. The Sixers are “resetting”Adam Silver: There’s a resetting of sorts going on with the 76ers right now. And I think that ultimately may speak louder in the marketplace of teams than any tinkering we do to the draft lottery.Is it time to step in and stop tanking?Chadwick Matlin: I’m interested about when you do step in as a commissioner. You’re basically the CEO of a big multibillion-dollar corporation. At what point is it your responsibility to intervene if one of your franchises is not performing in a way that represents the league?Adam Silver: Well, I would say that there’s lots of different ways of so-called “stepping in.” There’s also cajoling and ongoing conversations that I have with owners, with team presidents, with general managers, where I’m expressing my opinion.

The goal is ambitious, but it’s not exactly new. In 2013, the World Health Organization set a similar objective, with a handful of countries including Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Namibia, and Botswana already reaching that goal.The United States still lags to reach that goal, with an estimated 40,000 new infections reported every year. Richman says it’s possible to stem the spread of HIV, but the federal government needs to make a much stronger commitment.Richman points to New York City as a model for managing the virus. In New York, people who are infected, are identified and promptly given the drugs for treatment. In some states, especially in the southeast, people with HIV have a more difficult time getting the drugs to help control it.Richman says it will take political will and more money to make the changes in public policy to help stop the spread of HIV.

Whether that should change is another topic. But what we do have is the desire to better ourselves and be forward thinking.It doesn’t take much forward thinking to realize that today’s jobs are becoming automated. Robots? Check. Artificial intelligence combined with Internet of Things devices? Check. They are coming and in ways we never thought possible 10 years ago. Who would have thought we’d be talking to chat boxes for customer service, for example?In general, automation is riding a wave as employers perceive better productivity and lower costs as benefits. Does this move toward a digital workforce mean fewer jobs? Leading economists argue the opposite, that automation will actually increase jobs.History tells the tale.Economists point to history to show that automation actually creates jobs. As odd as it sounds, as automation speeds up a task, humans come in to do the surrounding tasks that have not been automated. For example, in the 1920’s when automation helped increase cloth weavers’ production by 50 perfect, the price of cloth went down, increasing demand, which in turn increased the number of weavers needed.Related: Advancing Automation Means Humans Need to Embrace Lifelong LearningA more recent example would be in the banking industry with automated teller machines (ATMs). When ATMs came into use, the number of bank tellers in 1988 was 20 per branch. This fell to 13 per branch in 2004. However during that same period, banks opened up 43 percent more branches and the overall number of bank-teller jobs increased.Millennials, Baby Boomers — we are all at risk.It doesn’t really matter your age or career stage, you are in to be impacted. An estate planning attorney who, for the last 20 years, successfully ran his own practice can suddenly find that an app replaces his services. A young mechanical engineering graduate may find jobs scarce due to advances in CAD and 3D printing. In fact, the coming wave of robots, cognitive computers and artificial intelligence can impact blue- and white-collar jobs equally.What is different than in the days of weavers and ATMs is that the jobs required now and in the future require higher-level skills. If an argument is to be made against digital transformation, it is that the divide between high-level skills and low-level skills will become wider, with little or no middle ground.Related: Don’t Worry So Much. What sets you apart is what you are willing to do about it.Ask for job training in a new area.Your current employer is probably thinking about ways to increase productivity through automation. One of the first things (hopefully) they are thinking about is the kind of skills they need. Talk to your manager, HR and IT to see what is happening. Find out if they plan to offer job training to transition valuable workers to new skills. If they are not, that may be a sign for you to look elsewhere soon.Get trained in an area that interests you.Doctors and nurses are required to attend courses to stay up to date in the medical field, yet for some reason, most other jobs don’t have that requirement. But there are community colleges and online courses that can provide you with the skills that will be in demand at your place of employment or elsewhere.Perhaps you are interested in gadgets and can learn about how robots work and how they are being used to automate repetitive steps in manufacturing. It might inspire you to use robots in your work.Be the person who starts a digital initiative.Perhaps your current role gives you an inside perspective on how things could be more efficient if only, if only….(fill in the blank). Research what it would take to implement your idea and suggest it. Be politely persistent if your immediate manager is cold to the idea and take your ideas to higher levels.At worst, you will be recognized as someone with forward-thinking ideas and someone who is ready to adapt. At best, you actually get to implement your idea, proving your digital aptitude and penchant to be part of the digital transformation.Become digitally literate.Are you the person always trying new things and trying out new gadgets? Lead a lunch session to introduce new digital things to your colleagues. Getting used to new things, to constant change not only stimulates the mind but it also prepares people to accept new processes and to think about how to apply the concepts into their own daily work.Embrace your robotic overlord.In many cases, automated processes and humans can co-exist. The main reason for robotics is that it can do things better than humans. Robots are especially good at repetitive actions — they don’t get tired and make mistakes. They are also good at doing two different things at once where correlations can be observed. After all, researchers predict there is a 50 percent chance that machines will be capable of taking over all human jobs in 120 years. The same article has some startling predictions of what will happen within the next 10 years.But knowledge is power, and taking proactive steps to ensure your skill set matches what is needed in the future can give us a sense of control.
