Amazon Android tablet due by October

first_imgThat Amazon has been working on an Android tablet of its own (or perhaps a pair of them) is no secret.What hadn’t been quite so clear just yet was when the devices would ship. Launching prior to the 2011 holiday rush would certainly make sense, and one report had pegged availability for some time in August. According to the Wall Street Journal, that’s a couple months off.AdChoices广告The Journal is reporting that Amazon will launch its first Android tablet — sporting a 9-inch display — in October. Also somewhat of a mystery is who exactly is manufacturing the Amazon tablet. Their source mentions “an Asian manufacturer.” That’s not much of a clarification considering just about every tablet on the market right now is assembled in Asia, but it does line up with previous information that Quanta had been tapped by Amazon.There’s been plenty of discussion about whether Amazon can compete with Apple and the iPad with its upcoming Android tablet, but it’s entirely possible that isn’t Amazon’s goal. Google, however, might make a juicy target. Of course, it’s also possible that Amazon isn’t that concerned about either competitor and is merely interested in enticing new customers to use its digital download stores by offering a first-party device at a decent price.Amazon has done its fair share of eyebrow-raising this summer, first securing Angry Birds Rio as a launch exclusive for its Android Appstore and followed that with a two-week lock on Plants vs. Zombies. But the company’s biggest splash came with the 99-cent download of Lady Gaga‘s latest album, Born This Way — which customers loved and record labels hated.With books, video, music, and apps already part of its ecosystem, all that Amazon is missing is a device that can help customers spend money on all four from the comfort of their couches.
