SHSU Holds Sole Custody of First Place After Day Two at Southland Championship

The Bearkats matched their opening round with another 295 in round two to create a two-stroke gap between them and Houston Baptist. Central Arkansas retained their third-place position with a 302-stroke performance in the second round. Lamar concluded Tuesday’s action with a score of 304 to help preserve their position as the fourth-place team.SHSU’s Kenlie Barrett matched her performance in the opening round with yet another 72 Tuesday afternoon. Barrett leads the field and is joined by Hanna Alberto, who stands second overall, and Tori Gatling, tied for eighth place, among the top-10 individuals. Barrett improved two spots from Monday afternoon and stands even with 18 holes left to play. As a team, SHSU has accumulated a score of 590, 14 strokes above par.Houston Baptist is led by Kaity Cummings who followed up her day one performance with a 73 on Tuesday to sustain her fourth-place position among the field. The Huskies added two strokes to their overall score and currently sit in second place with a 592 (+16). Following a slow start that resulted in a +12 showing after the first nine holes, Cummings and her squad finished the back nine six strokes above par to claim a 297 (+9) for the day.Central Arkansas completed play Tuesday with a 302, placing its total team score at 590 for the tournament. Emma Svensson leads the Bears and stands tied for fifth individually with a 147 through the opening two days. UCA combined to knock down seven birdies during Tuesday’s competition but were plagued by 17 bogeys in the front nine.At 9 a.m., HBU will once again tee off alongside Sam Houston State in round three but this time will also be joined by Central Arkansas, as the top six teams in the tournament will compete in groups of three for the final round.Fourth-place Lamar (606, +30), fifth-place Stephen F. Austin (609, +33) and sixth-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (616, +40) will begin their third round together at 8:15 a.m.Leading off Wednesday will be seventh-place McNeese (622, +46) and eighth-place Incarnate Word (628, +52) with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.last_img read more
