Philadelphia’s urban renewal era left behind an east-west cut through the city’s urban fabric in the form of the sunken, 100-foot-wide Vine Street Expressway. Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood was one of those disconnected by the expressway, with many of its formerly densely inhabited blocks sliced into odd shapes and sizes. Today, the expressway continues to divide pedestrian activity, while most of the odd-shaped leftover lots are used for surface parking. XS House rejuvenates one such leftover site, adding urban density and street life while encouraging walkable lifestyles.Save this picture!Floor plan diagramXS House placed seven apartments on the 11’ x 93’ parcel, expanding the extremely narrow footprint with strategic use of bays, mezzanines, and bi-level upper units while maintaining a minimal single-stair core layout. Upper units are accessed from the common stair, while lower units enter directly from the street, activating Vine Street with additional foot traffic.Save this picture!© Sam OberterSave this picture!© Sam OberterThe expanded envelope approach to this project emphasizes vertical living. A single shared stair runs up through the center of the project and individual unit stairs unlock mezzanine levels. Despite being a three-story building, the 63-foot-tall section connects seven levels of occupied space within its very small footprint.Save this picture!© Sam OberterProject gallerySee allShow lessFlat House / Practice Architecture + Material CulturesSelected ProjectsRestaurant in Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum / KUME SEKKEI Co.Selected ProjectsProject locationAddress:Philadelphia, PA, United StatesLocation to be used only as a reference. Dr. Ermshar, who in 2015 was listed a top doctor by Pasadena magazine for the third consecutive year, has dedicated her professional life to helping others get back on their feet and achieve their personal best.“I am so impressed with Hillsides as an organization and with its mission of filling the needs of children and families who are in foster care or in crisis,” said Dr. Ermshar. “It is an honor to chair the annual gala using a concept close to my heart, music, which I feel has the ability to reach and connect with people across all cultures and backgrounds.”Hillsides annual gala supports the agency’s many services and programs. It is a chance for supporters to gather together to celebrate Hillsides mission of creating lasting change for children and families and to enjoy fine food, wine, and entertainment. Dr. Ermshar also plans on putting her own twist on the gala by adding unique musical elements to the evening.Dr. Ermshar comes to her role with extensive gala planning experience. She spent her childhood attending performances at the LA Opera, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Glendale Symphony. She developed a deep love of opera and classical music in part due to the influence of her grandfather, who owned over 50 instruments and built a large private music hall where he hosted elaborate music salons that at the time were considered can’t-miss events in the San Gabriel Valley. An accomplished pianist and vocalist herself, Dr. Ermshar attended Pepperdine University on a vocal scholarship where she majored in psychology and minored in vocal performance.Professionally, Dr. Ermshar maintains a thriving private practice focusing on psychological treatment and assessment, neuropsychology, and forensic psychology (the intersection of law and mental health). Adessa Albert, destined for greatness

first_imgSHE’S a powerhouse on the track, from her athletic build to her speed. She commands attention when she charges, if for no other reason but because she’s just nine years old. When you find out that she’s from the mining town of Linden, you begin to understand the skills of this Pee Wee – Adessa Albert.Albert just this week gave a few eye-catching performances in the Girls’ Under- 10 category at the National Schools Championships. Those performances included new records in the 100m and long jump event, as well as taking the age group Champion title. It was in the sprints that spectators truly sat up and paid attention to the little Amelia Ward’s Primary School student, particularly in the 100m races. In her heat Albert ran the record-breaking time of 13.70 seconds, erasing a three-year-old 14-second record by Odessa France. When Albert returned in the final on Wednesday she won the event in 14.16 seconds, still a sight to behold as the petite girl in yellow and black outclassed her competitors.Over at the jumping pit she set the long jump record at 4.03m, erasing a previous 3.89m record, etching her name in the record books in her second year at Nationals. She also took gold in the 200m, which she won in a time of 29.49 seconds; while she finished second in the 400m with a time of 1:12.31s.Grooming to perhaps one day becoming the next big sprinting female in Guyana, Albert is another protégé, of renowned Linden coach Johnny Gravesande. The man behind the likes of World Youth Championships silver medallist Daniel Williams, and CARIFTA Games multiple gold medallist Chantoba Bright.Albert has been under Johnny’s tutelage since the age of six.Her accomplishments are coming as no surprise to her beaming mom, Kaisha Cummings, who began to observe Albert’s capabilities from a very young age and, encouraged by her daughter’s natural love for running, wanted to see how far she could go.“We didn’t decide for her to be an athlete she just loves the sport itself. She just likes running. If you send her out she would just always run instead of walk,” Cummings shared“We saw that she had potential, so we decided to join her in a club and see how she would perform. Since then she would be performing at different events.”Born at the Mackenzie Hospital, Albert began testing out her skill against others her age when she was three years old and attended nursery school.“She used to attend Royal Arts of Learning in Amelia’s Ward, and they would have sports and the children would take part so she took part from the first year of nursery. And from there she just continued running,” Cummings recalled. However, because the school was a private one it did not take part at the inter-school level of sports, limiting Albert’s chances of going to Nationals. So her mother transferred her to the Amelia’s Ward Primary, in 2015, to open up a door for her daughter to showcase her skill. That very year Albert qualified for Nationals and performed in the Girls Under-8 category. Even then, seeing this little girl charging to win after win had many commenting of the promising prospects for this young lady. Her mother boldly declared that she has high hopes to see Adessa go far. “I have future plans for her in athletics. Maybe even the Olympics.”last_img read more

Wildcats show signs of improvement, move into top 10 of Single-A provincial poll

first_imgThe Mount Sentinel Wildcats moved up the confidence ladder to place in the gold tier at the 48-team Best of the West High School Girl’s Volleyball Tournament Saturday in Kelowna.”It was a good weekend overall for us,” said Mount Sentinel head coach Joe Moreira. “(We) took some baby steps forward.”The Wildcats lost all three games in the round of 16 gold tier, but Moreira was more than pleased with the improvement of his young team.”We competed against teams that are better than us,” Moreira explained. “We lost to McMath (of Richmond #3 – AAAA), Trinity from Edmonton, and St. Thomas Moore (of Vancouver #8-AA). We had only one (poor game) . . . the first set versus STM. The rest we played with only a minimum of fear.”The Wildcats opened the tournament Friday reeling off three impressive wins, including an upset of sixth-ranked White Rock Christian. The Warriors are ranked four spots ahead of Mount Sentinel in the more recent High School Single-A Girl’s poll.”We played well and with confidence,” said Moreira of his team of Grade 9s and 11s.After three weeks of tournaments the Cats get a breather before heading to the South Okanagan to play in the Pen Hi Lakers tournament Oct. 28-29.The Kootenay High School Single-A volleyball playoffs is set for mid-November.
