India captain Mithali Raj opens up on reading habit before going out to bat

first_imgThe weather conditions in Taunton didn’t allow the Indian women’s cricket team to have an outdoor net session on Wednesday but that isn’t something which India captain Mithali Raj is going to worry about too much.India are gearing up to face Stephanie Taylor’s West Indies side on Thursday and are the overwhelming favourites after their emphatic 35-run victory over hosts England in the first game.India displayed a swagger and quick moves on the field in the first match that make them look ominous now with Mithali leading by example. The 34-year-old has also earned the nickname of Captain Cool after she was seen reading a book right before going out to bat against the Windies and smashed 71 runs off 73 balls. It was her seventh consecutive half-century in ODI cricket, a record which no other player in women’s cricket has managed so far. She has been unbeaten in six of those innings.Mithali then went on to reveal that it wasn’t the first time she has read a book before going out to bat and it is a habit that she has.”It’s a habit and I read a lot. I do that even before going out to bat and it’s just not in international games but also in domestic cricket as well. That’s what I was doing, it’s just that the matches are being televised now so the people got to know about it,” Mithali said in an interview with [email protected] captain #MithaliRaj discusses her side’s start to #WWC17 and tomorrow’s game against @windieswomen. pic.twitter.com/647Su4pnCmadvertisement- Cricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) June 28, 2017Talking about the team’s upcoming match and the training session which happened indoors due to the weather, Mithali said,”We could get the outdoor facilities but we did some knocks and the bowlers did a bit of bowling in the indoor nets.”The first game has built a good momentum for us in the tournament but we do understand that we have to play a few more games before we qualify for the semi-finals. The next game is equally important.”Unlike India, the West Indies didn’t get off to a good start in the tournament losing against Australia in the first match. But Mithali is wary of the Windies’ strong batting lineup and says her players have to make sure that complacency doesn’t creep into them.”West Indies usually in the World Cups they start very slow. But they have some very good players and they do have a good batting lineup. It’s important for us to see it as another game and we can’t afford to get complacent after our first win. It’s important for us to win this game and keep ourselves in the hunt for a berth in the semis,” Mithali added. In the head to head records, India have a 5-0 advantage over the West Indies in World Cup ODIs over a stretch of two decades — 1993 to 2013.last_img read more
